# Grading a Quiz Attempt

Grade one student’s written answers against the rubric, review the suggested ratings, and edit the feedback.

<figure><img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2F2fxvIUk6kO5NV6YbNqZ3%2Farticle-banner.png?alt=media" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Quiz grading shows one attempt at a time: the student’s written answers on the left, and the rubric and feedback on the right. The AI suggests a rating for each criterion with the evidence behind it, but you decide every grade.

## Opening an attempt

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Click Review Submissions

On the quiz page, click **Review Submissions** in the right sidebar. It opens the first attempt awaiting review.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Find your way around

The header shows the student’s name, the attempt’s status (for example **Ready for Review**) and when it was uploaded. **Progress** shows where you are in the queue; use the arrows to move to the previous or next attempt. Decisions you’ve made are saved before you move.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Reading the answers

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Expand an answer

Each written question has a card. One is expanded at a time, outlined in amber, showing the **Student Response**. Expanding another collapses the previous one, so the rubric stays in view, and a long response scrolls inside its own card.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Check the auto-graded questions

Below the written answers, **Auto-Graded Questions** shows what Canvas already scored, with the points for each and a running total. They’re for reference only and can’t be changed here.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Grading on the Grades tab

The **Grades** tab shows the **Rubric** with **Rubric points**, the running total, at the top. What you see depends on the rubric type:

* **Question-By-Question Rubric:** one card per written question.
* **Holistic Rubric:** one card per rubric criterion, covering the whole quiz.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open a criterion

Click a card to expand it; opening one collapses the previous one. Read the **Suggestion rationale (instructor review only)** and the **Supporting Evidence**, quotes from the student’s answers labelled with the question each came from. Students never see the rationale. **Hide locations** collapses the quotes.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Pick a rating

Click a rating to record it. The AI’s rating is tagged **Suggested** but is never pre-selected. You can also type a score in the points box; it stays between 0 and the criterion’s maximum. **Rubric points** updates straight away, and the card shows **Graded** once it has a decision.

It reads **Suggestions applied** afterwards, and you can still change any rating.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Reviewing the feedback

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the Feedback tab

Click **Feedback**, or **View Feedback** on a criterion card. The tab holds **General Feedback** and **Quiz Feedback**, with a card per question showing **What you did well** and **How you can improve**, plus the supporting evidence.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Edit what students will read

Edit, copy or delete any note. **View Rubric** returns to the criterion on the **Grades** tab. Feedback edits are kept on the page until you click **Confirm & Finish**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

<figure><img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2Fg3sZg15AIZKmbaLChXfw%2FScreenshot%202026-10-14%20at%203.18.41%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=1d0af434-8a3f-43c1-ae68-a090d51703a3" alt="Feedback tab with General Feedback and per-question What you did well and How you can improve notes"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Finishing the attempt

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Click Confirm & Finish

**Confirm & Finish** stays disabled until every criterion has a decision, so an attempt can’t be finished half-graded. Click it to save the attempt’s grade and feedback and move on.

{% hint style="info" %}
Students don’t see grades or feedback until you push them to Canvas. See [Releasing Quiz Grades and Feedback](/canvas-support-articles/quizzes/quiz-release.md).
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Or exit

**Exit** returns to the quiz page without finishing. Ratings you’ve already picked are kept.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## FAQ

<details>

<summary>Why is Confirm &#x26; Finish greyed out?</summary>

A criterion still has no decision. With a question-by-question rubric, that means every written question, not just the ones you read closely.

</details>

<details>

<summary>An auto-graded score looks wrong.</summary>

Fix it in Canvas. Those scores belong to Canvas; TimelyGrader shows them so the total matches your gradebook.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Does Accept Suggestions grade the attempt for me?</summary>

It applies each suggested rating as your decision. Nothing reaches students until you push grades to Canvas, and you can change any rating first.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Holistic or question-by-question, which suits this quiz?</summary>

Question-by-question when the answers test different things, because each gets its own criteria and evidence. Holistic when every question probes the same skill. Change it with Edit on the quiz page.
