# Sending oral grades to your LMS

Choose the destination assignment and what goes back with the oral grade, then push grades from Manage Submissions.

Each oral activity sends its grade to one LMS assignment, the destination. You choose it during setup and can change it on the **Passback Settings** tab under **Edit**. You then push grades from **Manage Submissions**, the same way as for assignments.

## Before you start

* The destination assignment exists in your LMS.
* For an Oral Defense, decide whether the oral grade goes to its own assignment or back to the source assignment.
* Grade and confirm attempts before you push. See [Grading an oral attempt](/canvas-support-articles/tutorials-oral-assessments-canvas/oral-review.md).

## Choosing where grades go

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Oral Quiz: check the destination

The assignment you imported is the destination. To change it, use **Select destination** under **General Setup**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Oral Defense: choose the destination

Under **Select destination** in **General Setup**, choose **Same assignment** to send the grade back to the source assignment, or **A different assignment** to pick another one. When the defense grade is separate, the source assignment isn’t offered, so the oral grade can’t overwrite the grade for the work.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Choose what goes back

In the **Grading** step, keep **Grade Passback Settings** on and choose **Overall grades**, **Feedback**, or both. An Oral Defense also offers **Criterion grades**. An Oral Quiz doesn’t, because its rubrics belong to individual questions. The step confirms where the oral grade is sent (and, for a defense, which assignment the questions are based on).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Change it later

On the **Passback Settings** tab, change the **Destination assignment** or the **Pass back** toggles. Turning all of them off means no grades go to your LMS.

{% hint style="warning" %}
If an Oral Defense’s rubric also grades the student work, the one combined grade can go back to the source assignment, and it replaces that assignment’s current grade.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Pushing grades

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open Manage Submissions

On the activity page, click **Manage Submissions**, then **Push to LMS**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Push the rubric if asked

If the rubric isn’t in the destination assignment yet, you’ll see **You have an unsynced rubric**. To send criterion grades or feedback, keep the box that pushes the rubric to the destination assignment ticked. If you untick it, only overall grades are pushed, and criterion grades and feedback stay in TimelyGrader.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Choose which submissions

Choose **Push Missing Entries** to add grades only for students with no entry in your LMS yet, or **Update Existing Entries** to overwrite LMS entries with the latest from TimelyGrader. Click **Next**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Review and push

Check the **Review & Confirm** summary and click **Push Grades**. Processing runs in the background. Any grade your LMS rejects is marked **Push Failed** in the Status column with its reason. Fix the cause in your LMS, then retry from that row.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Grades may become visible to students immediately, depending on your LMS posting policy. Only push after grades and feedback have been reviewed.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## FAQ

<details>

<summary>The source assignment isn’t in the destination list.</summary>

That’s deliberate when the defense has its own grade. Create a separate assignment in your LMS for the oral grade, or choose **Same assignment** if you’re grading the work and the defense together.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Criterion grades is missing.</summary>

It’s only offered for Oral Defense.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Is immediate feedback sent to the LMS?</summary>

No. **Feedback** sends the feedback you released after grading, not the formative feedback students saw between attempts.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Do students see grades as soon as I push?</summary>

That depends on your LMS posting policy.
