# Grading an oral attempt

The recording, evidence map, transcripts and rubric on one screen. Accept AI suggestions or pick your own ratings, then confirm.

The grading view puts the recording, an evidence map, each question’s transcript and the rubric on one screen. If grading suggestions are on, the AI suggests a rating for each criterion with the evidence behind it. Nothing is applied until you accept a suggestion or pick a rating yourself, and nothing reaches the student until you confirm.

## Before you start

* The student has finished the activity.
* Grading suggestions are set up on the **Grading Settings** tab, if you want them. See [Grading and feedback settings for oral activities](/canvas-support-articles/tutorials-oral-assessments-canvas/oral-grading-feedback.md).
* To check answers against the submitted file, **Also show student submission in the grading view** is on.

## Grading an attempt

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the grading view

On the activity page, click **Start Reviewing** (or **Continue Reviewing**). The header shows the activity and student, and **Progress** shows where you are in the class. Use the arrows to move to the previous or next student, or **Skip** to leave this attempt ungraded for now.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Find each answer

The recording bar has a mark for each question. Click **Show video** to watch. The **Evidence Map** has one row per criterion, with a mark where it was answered, coloured **Answered well**, **Needs review** or **Weak answer**. Click a mark or a row to jump there. Below it, click a question to expand the transcript of its answer. For an Oral Defense, each question also shows the part of the submission it’s about.

{% hint style="info" %}
An Oral Quiz is one continuous recording, and retaken answers stay visible, marked **Retake**. Rate the answer the student kept as final.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="success" %} <img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2Fms2lmbcFJs7XOGunUDRn%2Fhugo-head.svg?alt=media" alt="Hugo" data-size="line"> **Hugo’s tip:** Pace, accent and hesitation are never scored. Transcripts are automatic, and small transcription errors aren’t held against the student. Play the recording wherever the exact wording matters to your rating.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Check the submitted work

When the submission is shown, tabs switch between the student’s oral attempt and the file they submitted. For an Oral Defense you can also click **Open file** above the questions. The rubric stays in view on both tabs.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Rate each criterion

On the **Grades** tab, each criterion shows the question it tests. Expand one to read the **Suggestion rationale (instructor review only)** and click **Play evidence** to hear it. Click **View Locations** under **Evidence** to see the transcript quote and whether it supports the rating, is uncertain, or is an issue. Then pick a rating. The suggested one is labelled **Suggested** but never selected for you. **Accept Suggestions** applies every suggested rating at once. **Total Points** updates as you go.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Review the feedback

Open the **Feedback** tab (or click **View Feedback** on a criterion). It has one note per question, drafted from the ratings you accepted, with **What you did well** and **How you can improve**. Click **View Locations** to see the supporting evidence, or **View Rubric** to go back to the rating. Edit anything before you release it.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Confirm

Click **Confirm & Continue**. It’s available once every criterion has a rating. Confirming releases the rating and feedback for this attempt and moves on. Click **Exit** to leave without releasing.

{% hint style="info" %}
Nothing is released until you confirm the attempt.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## After grading

Push confirmed grades to your LMS from **Manage Submissions**. See [Sending oral grades to your LMS](/canvas-support-articles/tutorials-oral-assessments-canvas/oral-passback.md).
