# Building an Oral Quiz question bank

Write the questions, decide how many each student answers, mark the ones everyone must get, and give every question its own rubric.

An Oral Quiz draws each student’s questions from a bank you write. You decide how many questions each student answers, which ones every student is asked, and how each answer is rated.

You build the bank in the **Questions & Rubric** step of setup. After setup, change it on the **Questions & Rubric** tab under **Edit**, which also lets you reorder questions and attach media.

## Before you start

* The Oral Quiz has been imported from your LMS. See [Oral Quiz or Oral Defense: getting started](/canvas-support-articles/tutorials-oral-assessments-canvas/oral-overview.md).
* Write more questions than you plan to ask, so students don’t all get the same set.
* Know what a strong answer to each question contains. That becomes its rubric.

## Building the bank during setup

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Add questions

Under **Question Bank**, click **Add question** and type the question in the box. Repeat for each question. To remove one, click its delete icon.

{% hint style="success" %} <img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2Fms2lmbcFJs7XOGunUDRn%2Fhugo-head.svg?alt=media" alt="Hugo" data-size="line"> **Hugo’s tip:** Keep each question to one idea. A question that asks two things produces an answer that’s hard to rate against a single criterion.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Set how many are asked

Under **How many questions will be asked**, use the stepper to set how many each student answers. It can’t go below one or above the number of questions in the bank. The line below it spells out what students get, for example “Each student answers 3 of 6. 1 always asked, 2 drawn at random.” If students answer every question in the bank, they get them in a random order.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Mark questions to always ask

Turn on **Always ask** for any question every student must answer. Always-ask questions count toward the number asked; the rest are drawn at random from the remaining bank.

{% hint style="warning" %}
If more questions are set to **Always ask** than students answer, setup flags it (“3 questions are set to Always ask but students only answer 2.”) and you can’t continue. Raise the number asked, or turn **Always ask** off for a question.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Give each question a rubric

Each new question starts with a rubric of one criterion and three ratings. Click the arrow to open it. Enter a **Criterion name** (what the question measures), then a **Points** value, **Title** and **Description** for each rating. Use **Remove rubric** to clear it, and **Add rubric** to give the question a new one.

{% hint style="info" %}
Every question needs text and a rubric before you can publish. Setup tells you which is missing: “Write every question, or delete the empty ones.” or “Add a rubric to every question.”
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Changing the bank after setup

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the Questions & Rubric tab

On the activity page, click **Edit**. The **Questions & Rubric** tab opens first. **How many questions will be asked** and the bank work the same way as in setup, and any problem shows directly under the stepper.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Edit, reorder or delete questions

Use the icons beside each question to edit it (click **Done** when you’ve finished), move it up or down, or delete it. **Add Question** adds a new question with no rubric. Click **Add Rubric** to give it one.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Refine the rubric

Click the edit icon on a question’s rubric to change the criterion name and add a description. In each rating, set **Points**, **Title** and **Description**. You can delete a rating, or add one between two existing ratings.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Attach media

Click **Attach media** on a question to add an image, video or audio clip that students see or hear with it. **Replace media** swaps the file, and the remove icon takes it off. Students can replay video and audio while they prepare and while they answer.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## FAQ

<details>

<summary>Why does each question have its own rubric?</summary>

A rubric written for one question describes what that particular answer should contain. Because Oral Quiz rubrics belong to individual questions, only the overall grade and feedback go back to your LMS (there are no criterion grades), and the rubric can’t be used to grade an LMS submission.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Next is disabled on Questions &#x26; Rubric.</summary>

The message beside **Next** names the problem: an empty bank, more questions asked than the bank holds, too many **Always ask** questions, an empty question, or a question with no rubric.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Do students get the same questions if they retry?</summary>

That depends on **Questions on retry** in the response settings. A retry can ask the same question again or swap in a new one from the bank. See [Response settings: answer modes, timing and retries](/canvas-support-articles/tutorials-oral-assessments-canvas/oral-response.md).
