TimelyGrader's Commitment to Privacy

Data Privacy & FERPA Compliance at TimelyGrader

Updated yesterday

At TimelyGrader, protecting student and instructor data is not just a promise, it’s fundamental to how we operate. Our platform is built from the ground up with privacy, security, and regulatory compliance at its core, so you can focus on teaching and learning with confidence.

Our Approach to Data Privacy

We recognize that universities and colleges must meet strict standards for handling educational records and personal information. TimelyGrader is committed to full transparency about how data is collected, used, and protected. Here’s how we ensure your institution’s data stays safe:

What Data We Collect

  • Assignment details and rubrics set by instructors

  • Student submissions (e.g., essays, projects, short answers)

  • User names, institutional email addresses, and course rosters

  • Platform usage data (such as log-in times and technical logs) to ensure security and performance

How We Protect Your Data

  • Encryption: All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest on our servers.

  • Access Controls: Only authorized users (instructors, students, designated admins) can access data relevant to their role. Access by TimelyGrader staff is strictly limited and monitored.

  • Anonymization: When data is processed by our AI partners (OpenAI, Google Gemini), all personal identifiers are stripped out before transmission.

  • Audit Trails: All access to sensitive data is logged and regularly reviewed.

FERPA Compliance

TimelyGrader is fully compliant with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which governs access to and privacy of student education records in the United States. Here’s what that means for your institution:

  • No Data Sharing for Marketing: Student data is never sold or used for advertising purposes.

  • Purpose-Limited Use: All data is used exclusively to support grading, feedback, and platform improvement. It is never used for unrelated activities.

  • Institutional Control: Universities and colleges retain full control over their data. Data can be exported or deleted at the institution’s request.

Working With Trusted Partners

TimelyGrader works with leading infrastructure and AI partners—such as AWS, MongoDB, OpenAI, and Google Gemini. All partners are contractually bound to uphold strict confidentiality and data protection standards, and never receive identifiable student information.

Data Rights & Requests

Students and instructors can request to access, correct, or delete their data at any time. Institutions may also request data deletion or export as needed. To submit a request, contact us at [email protected].
