Set Oral Assessment Defaults once so every new Oral Quiz and Oral Defense starts the way you like.

*New · October 2026*

{% hint style="info" %}
Defaults apply to oral assessments and oral defenses imported after you save them. Each assessment can override them.
{% endhint %}

## Before you start

* You have run at least one oral assessment and know which settings you change every time.
* You have permission to edit the course settings.

## Steps

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open Oral Assessment Defaults

Go to Settings and open Oral Assessment Defaults. New assessments record video and audio by default; change that here if you usually want audio only.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Set response defaults

Set the answer modes, preparation and answer time, and retries you use most often. They become the starting point on the Response Settings tab of every new import.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Set grading and feedback defaults

Set the grading instructions and the immediate feedback students receive after each answer. Immediate feedback never includes scores.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Override where needed

Open an assessment and click Edit to change any setting for that assessment only. The defaults stay as they are.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Troubleshooting

<details>

<summary>An existing assessment did not change.</summary>

Defaults only apply to new imports. Change an existing assessment from its own tabs.

</details>

## FAQ

<details>

<summary>Do defaults copy questions or rubrics?</summary>

No. Questions and rubrics belong to each assessment. Defaults cover how students respond and how answers are graded and fed back.
