# Reusing settings from other assignments

Importing assignment settings from previous assignments or share your settings with other instructors

<figure><img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2F2fxvIUk6kO5NV6YbNqZ3%2Farticle-banner.png?alt=media" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Before you start

* You already have an assignment set up the way you like even if it is from a previous course.
* You know what you want to copy over (such as grading instructions and feedback settings, etc)

## Steps

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### When you import or create your new assignment

On the assignment settings page, you will see the 'Import Assignment Settings' page. This will initiate the import settings process in which you will have two choices to import.

<figure><img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2F6lSOGLwcQVYmTubnEbRU%2FScreenshot%202026-10-13%20at%203.00.10%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=6629ebc2-cada-4550-be5e-eec101ec8e93" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The two options are 1) Search Through List 2) Search by ID.

<figure><img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2FORxi2SyFP61QC01Rsu01%2FScreenshot%202026-10-13%20at%203.03.03%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=861b5b73-980f-4754-a1c5-7c3a5520db97" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

1. **Search Through List:** similar to how our features work, this retrieves a full list of courses that you are in and their corresponding assignments to easily select a course from a previous term.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2F1fSjfVQkaha35PEkausF%2FScreenshot%202026-10-13%20at%203.05.15%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=88edb780-1823-4706-b5e7-d1a0a7775794" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

2. **Search by ID**: in some scenarios, you may want to share your assignment settings with other instructors or use ones that another instructor created. This can be done as long as all courses are within the same institution. Because of our single tenant data archiecture, data can't be shared across different institutions. \
   \
   To find the Assignment ID, simply go to the main Assignment page. You may need to Generate an ID if not done already. Use this ID for the 'Search by ID' option.

<figure><img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2Fqu5zvTo35tzPScE7LMTh%2FScreenshot%202026-10-13%20at%203.07.35%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=f1f33426-9b64-493d-ba34-4fb3dc016acc" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Select what to import over

Once a target assignment has been selected, you will be prompted to select what you want to import over. This contains literally everything on the edit page: assignment description, rubric, citation format, etc.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2FVc9oLsG6CWl90etA1xId%2FScreenshot%202026-10-13%20at%203.08.59%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=ce3926d8-3e9b-4e1d-baad-43d684b98f61" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="success" %} <img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2Fms2lmbcFJs7XOGunUDRn%2Fhugo-head.svg?alt=media" alt="Hugo" data-size="line"> **Hugo’s tip:** Remember if you import the rubric, the old rubric will overwrite existing rubrics even if they are imported from the latest LMS assignment. We don't recommend importing old rubrics over unless specifically required as it may trigger a Rubric Passback pop up.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Mapping criterion specific instructions

You will also be able to import over criterion specific instructions. This is the only part where things get become complex if you are using a brand new rubric.&#x20;

We will automatically map instrutions in order and one to one like in the below screenshot.

If you like to change the mapping, you can click on 'View' to manually assign instructions to different criterions.

<figure><img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2Fqrjqm2iHqahKVeiROpPe%2FScreenshot%202026-10-13%20at%203.12.07%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=65dd1a7d-aaa2-45df-b461-7fcd4643011f" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Confirm before it goes live

Next, you will be able to confirm all the changes before the changes are made.

<figure><img src="https://3711328535-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVTk0635Lo8R5owJx3bPK%2Fuploads%2FZhcctUR6l9tAXf6SReYh%2FScreenshot%202026-10-13%20at%203.14.03%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=d70fe5b0-3d95-4a6c-909e-e683d7970cab" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Troubleshooting

<details>

<summary>The duplicate has no submissions.</summary>

That is expected. Duplicate copies setup, not student work.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Changing a rubric changed another assignment.</summary>

Rubric templates are shared. Duplicate the rubric before editing it for one assignment.

</details>

## FAQ

<details>

<summary>Can I copy settings into an imported LMS assignment?</summary>

Yes. Attach a rubric template and set feedback from your defaults; the LMS link is unaffected.
